it was attached to a wheel on a tractor trailer. It was maybe 8"-10 ” in diameter and about the depth of the wheel. It looked like a wire trashcan you might see in a park

it was open at the end so I would think after a certain speed your hamster would probably be forced through the wires and fling all over the road in 100 pieces

That explains why you didn't see the hamster then!! The trucking company may only use them for yard manoeuvres and traffic light sprint's anyway...lots of torque in a hamster.

sticking out from the inside hub? Probably a step so they can get up an attach the wires from the cab to the trailer, my brother-in-laws trucks always had them.

Information you can’t use: cage steps were standard equipment on Land Rover Forward Control models .

it looks a lot like that but they were mesh and looked like you would bend them over if you stepped on it.
